Getting started
Which phones does Crux work on?
Crux is in beta on iPhone. The Android app is in testing and needs testers. Join the beta and tell us which phone you use.
Which watches are supported?
Apple Watch, paired with an iPhone. Wear OS and Garmin watches are not supported yet. Importing sessions from Garmin is planned.
Do I need a watch?
No. Everything can be logged on the phone. The watch adds hands-off tracking of attempts, height and rest.
How do I set my gym?
Open Settings, then Training locations. Add your gym or pick it from the list. If your gym uses colour circuits, its colours appear when you log.
Can I bring in data from Apple Health?
Yes. Open Settings, then Apple Health, and connect. Crux reads steps, resting heart rate, active energy, sleep, heart rate variability and workouts.
Logging and the watch
My climbs from the watch are missing.
Climbs are saved on the watch first and sent when your phone is reachable. Open the Climbing tab with your watch nearby. If climbs are waiting, a sync row appears with a Retry button.
What is Just climb?
A watch mode that records a whole session with no taps. It detects each attempt and groups attempts into climbs. Afterwards you review them on your phone and mark each as sent or not.
The watch says it cannot track attempts.
Tracking needs motion access. On your iPhone open the Watch app, then Privacy, and allow Motion and Fitness for Crux.
I have two Health workouts for one session.
This happens if a recording was interrupted. Crux offers to combine them on the Climbing or Workouts tab. You choose which recordings to include.
Why are the grades at my gym shown as colours?
Many gyms grade boulders by tape colour. Crux stores each gym's colours and the grade range behind each one. If a range looks wrong, use Suggest an edit on the gym's page.
Beta and Pro
Who is Beta?
Beta is the coach inside Crux. It is an AI model that reads your logbook and writes reviews and plans. It runs on Anthropic's Claude.
How are free reviews counted?
You get three session reviews in any 30 day period. Your first ever review does not count. Scanning a meal photo is free and does not count either.
Does Beta give medical advice?
No. Beta does not diagnose, and it will not suggest a calorie target under 1,200 a day. For an injury or a health worry, see a GP or a physiotherapist.
Numbers
How does Crux estimate climbing calories?
From your time on the wall, the height you climbed and your body weight, using published measurements of climbing. Each figure says whether it was measured or assumed. Read the method.
Why does Crux disagree with my watch?
Watches estimate energy mostly from heart rate. Heart rate runs high in climbing because of sustained gripping, so those estimates tend to read high. Crux shows its source so you can compare.
What is training load?
Your last 7 days of training compared with your last 28. It uses the effort you rated and how long each session lasted.
Account and data
How do I delete my account?
Open Settings and choose Delete account. Everything is removed at once and cannot be restored.
Can I turn analytics off?
Yes. Open Settings, then Privacy, and switch off "Help improve Crux". Crash reports stay on so bugs can be fixed.
Who can see my climbs?
Nobody, unless you share a session to a crew, accept a tag from someone you climbed with, or switch on a public profile. More about your data.
